First, learn what racism is, and what it’s not. I need White people to understand that all White people are racist.
Admit it, and let’s move onto the business of repairing and healing the country. We can’t do it without you.
Yes my dears, all White people are racists. All. Of. Them.
Here is where you stop to cry, clutch your pearls, rant and rave aloud to tell me how wrong I am, and to tell me not all White people. I’m doing reverse racism (there’s no such thing as reverse racism), and you’re ready to do tit for tat…
Achieving equality feels hopeless most days because so many people are so unwilling to invest in educating themselves about racism. Racism is the primary driver of inequality in America. Understanding racism is the only way we can do the work of making things more fair, and I’m all for that. It’s one reason I write so much about race. I’m vested anti-racism education because I benefit from it even the road is slow going. There aren’t many good resources that describe racism using first-hand accounts and experiences through the eye of victims.
Often, when we writers talk about racism and…
All you have to do is read. It’s ain’t that hard. Google is free. Educate yourself on the different types of racism and the difference between racism and prejudice. Can’t talk seriously with folks who don’t know the difference.
The claps and new followers aren’t leading to more earnings. What’s really going on Medium?
I have been writing on Medium for almost three years, and I have for the most part enjoyed my experience as a new writer. During my time here I was able to become a better writer and earn a little money for some groceries. I thought I was doing something.
But like all good things coming to an end, so had Medium.
Since they started adding their own publications, writers have had to scrape for shine scraps to have work seen. I was…
Black rage is the only language White people understand from us. Most are incapable of making the connection to their beliefs of Black folks being subhuman. But White folks themselves are extremely violent, though data doesn’t capture their violence because White people are in charge of data collection and where they decide to look to collect the data.
America has built an entire system to watch, police, and control Black people. It’s why we feel smothered. It’s why we can’t see any way out of it. It’s the reason we’re angry. …
My old retired neighbor’s house used to be so quiet. It was he and his wife, and another woman. All of them are up in age. I see them from time to time and wave. Sometimes we exchange mail accidentally delivered to the wrong mailbox. On occasion, I’ll catch Ralph Macchio (my neighbor’s secret nickname because of the headband and long songs he wears) sitting in the bushes watching us in the pool. For the most part, they’ve been really good quiet neighbors that is until their adult granddaughter, Kay, moved in a little before Christmas. …
Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be rich and selfish like Ted Cruz.
The kind of man
that will lead you
into
a snowstorm,
then take off
with his wife and kids
for expensive, sunny
vacations
in another country
inviting rich friends
leaving you
alone
to freeze
and starve to death
Mamas don’t let your babies grow up to be a jelly backed Ted Cruz
The kind of dude that
will lie
on the kids
throws his wife
under buses
to avoid
taking responsibility
for not leading
his stupid followers
to safety
in their time
of trouble
Mamas…
Now that the Impeachment Trial of the Century is over, nothing happened, and our country looks like a damned tornado fools out here in these international streets, the Republicans are going to go full steam ahead with their plans to become an authoritarian government. We’re headed to becoming a Russian protege nation in a matter of two to four short years. The majority of the White voting population is rejecting a more progressive nation where Black and Brown people are included. One where Black and Brown people have more power and White people have less say.
One of my favorite beaches in South Florida isn’t one of the more popular ones like Las Olas Beach or South Beach. Instead, it’s a small, out-of-the-way beach, Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park. Being new to the state, I’m not always aware of the racial fights and civil rights history of South Florida, especially as it relates to Black History. Without realizing it, I had stumbled upon an obscure Black History nugget.
I knew enough to know if a woman named Eula Mae Johnson had a park named after her, she had to be Black and someone of…
I used to be a religious woman. I grew up in the racist, segregated Bible belt in South Carolina, where the word of God rules. Even if you’re not religious, folks still mind God’s word.
Religious folks in the South love to talk about love. They love to say they love everybody. When white folks say it, I always give them the side-eye. The way they live tells me exactly who they love, and God is not involved in the process. As a proponent of equality and unity, I’m all for love in the practical sense of the word. I…
