I can relate. At 47, I have really struggled to reinvent myself. Writing has saved me, but I didn’t get a degree and go into debt to be tossed out like an old rag. Even the nonprofit sector exploits, preferring to hire cheaper, less experienced young folks over seasoned pros for fear we will leave.
Trying to get employment in the nonprofit sector today is humiliating, degrading, and is not the spirit and original intent of the charity sector. Sometimes I hope our entire economic system implodes. It’s not fair, it’s predatory, and it’s discriminatory.
I wish you the best on transitioning in this eternally unstable, cast away work climate. It’s hell!.
