I really enjoyed this, and my heart dropped to read you were leaving, but I understand. We don’t value education. The public education system rewards White, wealthy communities and penalizes poverty essentially robbing kids and educators of chances to make a difference in the world. I don’t blame anyone for leaving public education, especially not POC. I fought as a parent against wealthy White parents who wanted everything their way, from the books we read to social activities after school. Money and race drives everything in education, and the inequitable distribution of education resources sets us up to fail, as designed.
I wish the best on your new endeavors. Sometimes I’m left to wonder if desegregation was a good thing. Your piece highlights something often not addressed in education progress, and that’s microaggressions which may staying in the field impossible. It’s a matter of life and death. Poor pay and racist bullshit is enough to not consider it. Thanks for sharing your story. It’s clear you need to leave for your mental, emotional, and financial well-being.
