I wish I could have given this a million claps Sam 🔥🔥🔥. I watched a special on Bernie Madoff years ago, and I was astonished at how stupid and greedy people are to accrue more money without working for it. They decided to gamble on a Wall Street “stock market guru” without any understanding of how the person accrue their wealth. These foolish people just saw his wealth, read a beautifully crafted resume/marketing ploy and gave up their money to a con-artist with the expected to reap wonderful secret benefits that only wealthy and well-connected people are entitled to… because it’s a scheme created by White men to gamble with people’s money.
And just like gambling in a casino, sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. We are feeding machines with the hopes of getting a jackpot. All the machine does is take our money. That stupid machine will hit a few weeks later, and give all of the greedy gamblers’ money to some unsuspecting person who put hardly anything into it.
I was amazed at the long list of wealthy White people, White led nonprofit organizations and nonprofit organizations caught up in the Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme. The excuses they gave just left me with my mouth opened over and over again. It was too much to listen to the stories of them handing over their modest earnings and monies people had placed in their trust over for the pot of gold at the end of rainbow.
It made me think about the stark differences in Black life, White lives and the bible. How we must always wait to get to heaven to reap our rewards a lesson given to us courtesy of massa. Meanwhile, massa is racks, on racks, on racks rolling in loot with secret schemes to get more and keep it. We are taught to work hard and we will one day be rich, when in all actuality, that’s never how it works.
Working hard is for dummies. Working is for “other” people (fill in the blank with poor Whites, lesser classes, Black and Browns, people who are not connected, non-white collar folks, etc.). Working hard doesn’t get us ahead, but schemes do.
Greed, privilege, classism, and yes racism are all intertwined into the Madoff saga and you did a marvelous job pointing this out.
