Thank you for sharing this. It was beautiful. My dad sounds a lot like yours. He was an amazing cat, straight no chasers sounds like it. You were blessed and I feel blessed to have known him through this essay. I’ve been thinking about my dad a lot lately. He’s getting old (almost 70), but he’s fought White Supremacy his whole life. He taught me everything I know. There is nothing in the world like a good Black dad. And that trauma you mention, my dad has it too. Something about that era. He opens up every now and then, but it’s amazing how they carry on. I’m going to write my dad more letters so he can have something to read when he’s not tinkering because of your dad.
Your father lives in you. Be the man he was and the kind he always wanted you to be. We need more of them. Be well and be kind to yourself.
