Thank you for sharing your feelings and understanding how this works. Heck, I acknowledge I have biases. When I see a White person, each and every time I have to brace myself for the type of reaction I’m going to receive, so that I can act accordingly. Having to do this for a lifetime sometimes leaves me a little jaded.
I’ll never forget I took a welding class with a bunch of big burly old White men who looked like members of Led Zeppelin. Pretty scary. I was the only Black woman/person in the class. I didn’t know what to expect. I prepared myself for bad attitudes and B.S. It was quite the contrary.
Those men were so kind to me, and we formed a bond that lasted until I moved away. We all have biases, but we must make decisions every moment of every day on whether those biases get to rule in the moment.
