THIS! I thought I was the only one feeling this way. I thought I was being selfish. I felt like it was wrong for Whites to be in this space meant for us, because Whites caused or allowed this trauma. I love CQ, but I’m disgusted at the oogling over Whites showing up in the room (i.e. The incessant show of love to Donnie Wahlberg, odes to Madonna for no damned reason). What have these people done for our communities to deserve such praise and welcome? Why wasn’t our mental health and well-being considered before the gaze was normalized in the room?
I’m angry/disappointed because if it were not for White people, we wouldn’t be here in this sunken place. If it wasn’t for Whites, we wouldn’t have this inept President. White Supremacists wouldn’t be marching with guns to open the country back up thanks to welcomed commands from the Grand Wizard of America. If it wasn’t for the apathy of those cool/safe White folks, perhaps our lives would be easier.
Most importantly, we can’t be shielded from White gazes because Black men continually and consistently open the door so that Whites can gaze. Because they love to control us, we should expect them to come, but we damned sure don’t have to roll out the welcome mat and leave the light on for them. They have everything, every place, and go anywhere. They have their own stuff. They need to go where they find comfort and let us have our music spaces. It’s the one thing that carries us through the rough times they exclusively create for us.
