This is one of the most important lines in this essay, and I link it back to the subtitle. The poor always fight the wars started by the wealthy. The citizens tend to have two sets of standards for the rich and the poor, and it’s all tied to politics. Those standards are set by elites. We somehow let the rich off the hook from fighting and protecting us as if they don’t have a responsibility to do so.

It’s the poor who is always protecting the rich, rarely the other way around. Coming from a military family, I understand the sacrifices. I know the costs.

Thank you for breaking down how difficult war is, and how most people don’t understand what happens when we send our young people off to war.
