This is so true and an excellent read!
What I’m experiencing with my Black upper-middle-income friends living in predominantly White suburbs now is that their Black kids are often racists. They think and act like their White classmates with a disdain for Black culture, Black people, and their Black identities. One friend’s kid leave the room anytime they have conversations about Black life that centers Blackness. The child loves White Supremacy intentionally placed in her life by well-meaning Black parents and taught/reinforced by the White teachers and White classmates she’s been around all of her formative years.
Black people are now having to teach their own Black children about racism and anti-Blackness and I find it actually mind-boggling and embarrassing that we’ve allowed this to happen.
My friends have learned they focused on comfort just like White people have and they’ve gotten the same results from it. Racist Black kids who are literally growing up to become self-hating, anti-Black young folks thanks to racism encountered during their K-12 education.
How. Did. We. Get. Here?
