This story made me cry. I made me think of my father and my oldest son. That photo did it. I don’t think I will ever forget this story. People with family members struggling with co-occuring disorders (substance abuse and mental health issues) completely understand how you feel. My heart goes out to you, and your poor brother. It appears the addiction gene is deeply embedded in your family’s roots (like mines), and it was swept under the rug or ignored. Nature vs. nuture. You can’t beat nature (genetics), no matter how hard we try. Thank you for sharing such a sad story.
This can happen to any of us, and the drug of choice when it comes to be addiction can be anything (sex, food, compulsive gambling, shopping). Some addictions are simply more palatable than others. My heart truly goes out to your family and your brother. Sending your strength, wishing for your peace.
